new starter ,,has spark at points, but turns over really slow,,battery has 6v an looks new..what do i need to do to get this motor turnin
over normal, its barely turnin over...battery reads 6v...cable is small...pos. ground system...friends tractor just tryin to help....thanks
as always...

small cables sounds like 12 volt cables, which will not work well on a 6 volt system.

5 volts does not = a fully charged 6 volt battery. the battery should have ~ 6.4 volts for a full charge.

sorry for the typo. that should read "SIX volts does not..."

See how it turns over with the key off. My "excellent starting" 6v 8N was cranking real slow after adjusting the points because it was just a bit too advanced timing.

Dewy,One thing is you need to replace both the small 12 volt #4 or so battery cables with some 0 or even oo copper cables, ground does not have to be a flat strap.Get cable and ends and solider the ends on with a propane torch then add some heat shrink to Finnish them up.Or if you can find some made up the correct length, but that is unlikely.clean where they contact shinny and bright a must! Hook ground cable to the steering box bolt or a bell housing bolt (shinny)and not the rusty battery box.Next pull the starter out and clean the two contact areas (shinny). With a good battery these things will make it spin over a lot faster. A full charged should have 6,4-6.7 volts,But change the cables as that is the size it came out with years ago.

" battery has 6v an looks new"

What HFJ said...?.6v doesn't get you much. At 6.03 volts, you only have a 25% charge.

What exactly is your battery voltage?

Or put a charger on it and don't worry about it.

Even though it turns over does not mean you have a full 6
put charger on it for 24 h and then see what it does.
