have a 9n with 12volt no. 4ga wire to starter from solenoid , press button to start sparks at starter terminal bolt put extra nut on to raise it a little higher no luck still sparks

Sparks are from loose/dirty connection in my experience.
Clean it up and make sure it's tight.

Sounds to me that maybe your starter terminal may be grounded. Check to see if it is insulated from the starter frame.

I have to agree with Mike OH. The loose connection suggestion has merit, but you said you added a nut, so one would think that you got it nice and tight. Let us know what you found.

ALL 9N and 2N Models never had a starting motor solenoid -that was a new 8N feature. Don't cornfuse the Neutral Safety Starter Push-Button Switch locate on the top cover by the lower shifter handle -it ain't a solenoid. How does an extra nut on the starter wire terminal work now?

I forgot to add in my post below -if you are also maybe cornfusing the OEM round-can cutout as a solenoid, that'd also be wrong. If you have a 12V switch-out system, with an alternator, and the OEM cutout is still in the circuit, that is part of your problem. You can have a 12V battery and still keep the OEM generator and cutout but otherwise, if not, then it isn't wired correctly for 12V.
