sherman combo whine

got it all back together, i am definitely getting 3 levels of whine, how full of gear oil does the sherman combo need to be before installing?
i will be splitting the 8n again to investigate whines, any suggestions?

thanks dave

vidaliaman ,A pint to a pint and a half of gear oil in it is good. The noise could be from your worn input gear with the chipped tooth that I saw in one of your pics.

one other note, the sherman worked well before with the exception of the shifting to the conventional 8n gears, this was because that rail was stuck, the hi and low rail worked well with no whines, the only thing new is a 1/64" mounting gasket that was not there before other than the new rebuild kit, before installing into the tractor it really turned easy and smooth

i actually replaced that gear, the guy in Pennsylvania sent me a new one. i'm sure i have at least one pint of gear oil in the sherman

Vidaliaman ,With the 1/64" mounting gasket was there any preload on the input bearing that you could tell?

no, however i believe i found the problem without having to split the tractor, stay tuned, thanks a bunch for your help on this Den

Please post your results Dave, I'd love to know what it is/was.
Mine doesn't whine, but I can see how that shift rail would get stuck.
I use high and low, rarely, if ever, use the direct drive anymore.
