Strange 8N Lift Problem

Pulled my 6 ft disc thru the garden area several times on Sunday. Started out fine but by the time I was finished, the lift would go high enough for the disc to clear the ground. Had a quick lookover and all I saw was that I had lost my hydraulic fluid dip stick.

Got out there today and found it was low on fluid, it would not weep out of the lower inspection plate bolt hole. Got a 2 gallon jug of UTF from Tractor Supply and poured in about a gallon before it started dripping out the bolt hole. No change. Would barely lift me standing on the carryall and as soon as I shut off the motor the wrms immediately dropped.

Pulled off the inspection plate and found NO fluid dripping from the top cover. I have Hokie's Hydraulics kit and nothing changed whether I was using it alone or in combination with the factory pump. I saw not motion in the oil around the pressure control valve area. Used my trusty Harbor Freight battery powered fluid pump and pulled out a couple gallons of fluid to give me less messy accress to the pcv as I was gonna stick a hose over it to see if it was leaking.

As I was feeling around for the valve, I felt something loose in the area. Pulled it out, it was the lower part of my dip stick!! Hoping that this might be the culprit, I started the tractor and the lift picked me right up. When I shut it off the arms stayed just where I left them. Put everything back together, put the fluid back in and the arms have been up for the last 3 hours!!

Turned out to be an easy fix!! I had visions of pulling the top cover to find the problem, and am glad I didn't have to. Though I will eventually do it as I have another cover with straight arms and a reformed (welded) cam and I want to try Zane's cam follower pin with the roller. Another time!!

Thank goodness - I was worried i was about to be named as culprit ????

PS> I would love seeing a picture of the roller pin...

No, I love my live hydraulics!! I have had it several years now and couldn't go back to the old way!!

That pin is not exactly rocket science. I was expecting a needle roller bearing.

I wish I knew of someone who had installed it...

Looks like the idea is the roller is held captive on the cam by the flanged sides. Might be problematic if the cam is badly worn. That said if the cam is in reasonably good shape it probably works as advertised. I think if it were me I'd make the roller captive on the pin as in a traditional cam follower design - less dependent on the cam profile.

Motion Industries

Koyo NRB CRHSBC-8-1 Cam Follower - Sealed
Roller Dia: 0.5000 in
Roller Width: 0.3750 in
Stud Dia: 0.2500 in
Stud Length: 0.6250 in

I only searched for about 5 mins and came up with this - Longer search may produce closer specs.

That's the general idea. For this application it doesn't have to be that heavy duty.
