A quality UTF - roughly the same operational viscosity (SAE 80) with a greatly improved viscosity index making it a better performer in cold weather,

I've been using NAPA R&O hydraulic fluid in mine for several years now. It works good all year. The R&O stand for rust and oxidation prevention.

As TOH points out, many times a decent quality UTF costs the same as a straight hyd oil. I'd use UTF vs plain hyd oil any day.

Plus UTF won't adversely contaminate the final drive and transmission oils if the seals start to leak. If you really want to use a plain hydraulic oil I would also suggest an AW over a vanilla R&O formulation.
