I have about 11 acres in crops, usually alfalfa hay. We put in 8 of corn this year, which made 240 bushels per acre. Work has kept many home and farm projects on the back burner, but I managed to find a five hour hole today in which to mow down the stubble.
It was spitting snow the whole time I was out there, and finally started to stick about the time I finished up.
Don't know if I'll find time to plow the field before the ground freezes too hard. My rule of thumb here in the Middle West is that the ground will be hard by Thanksgiving. That's also the marker for when we expect to see the first snow, but this year's started early - we've already had about 4" spread across several snow events and it's only November 17!
I'd love to go plow in some 'poor man's fertilizer' if we get more before the ground's too frozen.
