8N Starter Drive

Finally getting around to replacing the starter drive and overhauling the starter on my 52.

Does anyone know if replacement parts for the OEM design starter drive are available (aside from the spring, which I do not need)?

I would not expect any such parts to be available from CNH, and I just had a very bad experience with the only local starter/generator/alternator shop that I know of and will not do business with them.

Yes, I know that I can replace the drive assembly with the later design(s), but all that I need is the part with the gear and I like the OEM design.

DC shows two replacement drive assemblies, the so-called positive drive and a generic design, which does not look like the OEM drive on my starter.

Long shot but thought I'd ask before replacing the drive.

Although I own both Model A Fords & 8N tractors, I have never had the Bendix out of both of them at the same time for a side-by-side comparison. I have had more than one VFOG tell me that they prefer the positive drive tractor Bendix for their A's, so I'll assume that IF the positive drive Bendix for an N will fit an A that the oem Bendix for an A will fit an 8N tractor.

The folks at Bratton's should be able to give you measurements, etc.

Thanks, Bruce.

The photo is not the same as my OEM N drive. Who knows, it is possible that the design of the drive changed over the decades.

It's been so long since I've seen one that all I remember is the spring!

It's been years since I've had a Bendix failure on an N.

Never had a failure on an A.

I guess 6 volts does have at least one advantage!

That and ring gears are two of the reasons why I have kept all of my vintage Fords 6V.

My starter drive did not fail but it locked into the ring gear and I had to loosen the starter to unlock it.

Once the oil filter, etc., was removed, I decided to rebuild the properly working starter and replace the drive due to some wear of the teeth.

I think I got one laying around someplace, will have to check. I have two of the one sold her at YT and have no problems with them and both of my 8n's are 12 volts.

Dean, not positive but I think I have an oem Bendix or two laying around if you?d like I could send one your way. Pay shipping only. Gonna be a couple days before I get back home though. Email is open.

Today, I looked at a new aftermarket starter drivee and decided that the gear teeth on my 66 year old OEM drive are better so I'm going to put it back on.

Thanks to all who responded.

ood call on putting old drive back on. I put new brushes in my starter, and decided I needed the new improved drive. The new drive shelled the gear after about 10 starts put old drive back on it's still working great.

I do have the 12v conversion that Tim hates.

I don't have a new one Dean, but I have several used ones.
If you're interested I'll send you pictures.
You could have your pick of them for free.
They're complete drive units. Spring, gear, etc.
As they came off the shaft.

Thanks, Royse.

I'll take you up on your offer.

My email is open on classic.
