9N PTO acting weird

Hi, I hope someone can answer my question. I removed and cleaned up the hydraulic pump on my 9N. I didn't do anything to the transmission. Now everything seems to work. It shifts, the PTO turns, the arms lift, BUT I can't engage the PTO unless the motor is off. When it's running, in neutral, with the clutch in, it grinds as if the clutch isn't in. But it shifts fine. I feel like the clutch is in as far as it can go, but something must be turning back there because the grinding sounds like gear on gear. Is this even possible? What could possibly be wrong??

What oil did you use and what is the temperature where you live?
I've had trouble with thick oil keeping things spinning when it's cold out.

Assuming you pulled the left side inspection plate (PTO lever), I would pull it again and make sure the shifting fork is engaged with the shift rail properly.

30 W. Its cold and rainy. It does seem like something could be stuck. Any suggestions on what it might be would be appreciated.

As for the inspection plate and lever. I think it's in correctly, because it shifts when the motor is off. Something must be stuck in the transmission, I'll try to get a diagram and see what it could be. I guess I'll have to remove the whole steering and transmission cover and try to figure out what's stuck unless someone knows an easy way.

Crank it and mash the clutch. Put in in gear. This should stop the gears from turning. The pto should shift in and out with ease. If not, you have enteral problems. You can remove the right port (shift plate) and feel to know if the lever is seated properly in the shaft rail.

Nothing PTO related in the bell housing or transmission case - PTO assembly is in the differential housing.

As Charner intimated, both of my 8Ns will grind if I try to engage the PTO with the transmission in neutral. Two other items to check that will cause difficulty are a loose or bent PTO shift fork {PN 722 in diagram}.

OK, I think the forks are strait. I'll try shifting it when it's in gear, with clutch in as soon as the yard dries out. Pictures and advice have been great.

"Oops I said 30 W. It's 90 W in the Transmission."

I use UTF that meets Ford spec M2C134D here in Michigan.
Traveller brand from TSC for one. There are many others.
