Ford 8n questions

Might be thinking of getting another 8n (8n number 5, but 2nd 8n running). Are there any different in hp from a front mount motor (does a side mount have more or less power). The one I'm looking at is a 48 front mount. If I was to get this tractor it would be use for a backhoe with dozer blade in front. Would I need a sherman for this (the sherman that was in the backhoe went into our side mount 8n)?

If your backhoe was run off a pto pump then a sherman in high range would give you a quicker response. If you ran one without a sherman it would still work
but just be a little slower.

The FM engines produced 23.6 HP and the SM made 26.3. Increase was due to higher compression rather than distributor location.

Thanks, how would you get higher compression? By boring out the motor. This motor might need a overhaul, so was I wondering if I get in there.

ompression gain was accomplished by size of combustion chamber in cylinder head.

So I can just switch out the head then. I have a head that came off a 1950 block (the block is from a side mount engine but I don’t know the year).

Oil filter mounting holes are in different location on side vs front mount, but a man could deal with that.

That shouldn’t be a issue. Looks like the holes are still on the head. I would probably have to make new lines or add something (I can’t remember if there were holes for the oil filter housing on the block).

I don't know why you want to clumsy up an 8N with a backhoe and a dozer blade. Rather than sink all kinds of money into an 8N why not just look for a better tractor?

I have had my 8N with an FEL for over ten years now and it's been a great little tractor. With a backhoe and a dozer blade on an 8N you're going to be wishing it had power steering and more power coming from that engine.

I purchased a 1958 MF202 Workbull with a four cylinder OHV gas engine for $2000. It has an FEL and a front fork attachment and power steering. It also has 40 HP and 6 speeds coming from a hi / lo transmission. It's a much better tractor than the 8N. However I will never sell the 8N. It's my dedicated mower tractor now. I never have to take the mower off of it.

Before sinking a bunch of money into a 23 HP 8N, why not look around and see what else you can find?

I’ve bee looking for a motor for the one I have (the block is junk). When we loaded the tractor onto the trailer, the steering was very easy. I coul see some one popping wheels with. I would rather put a bigger engine onto the tractor. I would rather have the backhoe on our Ford 6610 or 3000 but I would have to take the arms off or something.

yes, the holes for the filter housing are in the head, regardless.

i agree completely with caryc, right down to my N being a dedicated lawnmower :)

i would love a loader and/or backhoe. if and when i set out to find one or the other, they would be for my allis-chalmers WD. it doesn't have a lot more power than an N, but it's a larger, heavier tractor with a real frame to attach stuff to. i have no interest in loading down my N with that stuff.

If I recall correctly the WD has almost twice the h.p. of an N. The one we had back in the day had a fresh rebuild and an M&W power kit giving it the same h.p. of the WD-45. Easily pulled a 3 bottom plow.

All 8N heads I have checked have the smaller pocket cylinder heads. Other than the oil filter mounting holes the front mount does not have the mounting holes for a side mt coil... The mounting issues can be worked around...

An original 8N head is a good upgrade from a 9/2 N head. The aftermarket head had the deep cylinder pocket like a 2/9N head and has all the provisions to mount the filter and coil... If I were to use a aftermarket head it would go to the machine shop for a massage to bump the compression...
