We put our Ford N to good use once again this year. This was our first year renting a small farm down the road from the home place, and I used it as our utility tractor on that farm, helping with the chores for our 43 head of sheep and moving equipment around the barnyard.

Winter has come early and with a vengeance. This was taken a couple of days ago. This morning, the air temp was 1*F and it's been snowing most of the day.

My son will be five in 3 weeks. He loves all aspects of farm life, but especially the livestock and the tractors. I'm really proud of him!

Keep that "trickle Charger" plugged in on the 9N or 8N which ever. Those batteries don't do well in Cold weather !!

Nice post Colin.
Seasons greetings to you and yours, albeit
a little early.
5 already... I would have guessed a couple.
It sounds like a good place for a kid to
grow up.
Cold here in Aitkin today too.

Hey Colin. I raised registered 'woolys' in the early 70's. Best time of my life. I have some pics. of my 4 yr. old son with the 'gang' - all I have to do is find them ! Best.

Colin-Good to see you post and the pictures. Your son was just a baby yesterday. Wow how time flies. Do you still live in town or on the farm now? We'll hae to
get together some time. Bill

Hi Bill! Hope you're staying warm! I imagine you were below zero yesterday. Yes, we're still in town. I don't think that'll change anytime soon, if at all. We're hoping to add some purchased land to the 60 acres we're farming now, but we've put our hearts into fixing this old house in town, and my wife is very much a town girl. We have a good balance that seems to work, even during the more demanding times on the farm.

Yes, please do let us know when you come through town!
Colin

Hi Bob! What breed did you raise? We have registered Border Cheviots. I also buy Katahdins in the spring to finish. We're mainly doing direct marketing of freezer lambs, but I'll be offering some breeding stock next summer.

I grew up around cattle and when I returned to the farm 8 years ago, I thought I would do beef cattle. I stumbled into sheep, with the assistance of our beekeeper. And I really like them. They're a good size for working alone and for our small acreage. And in general, the ewes and lambs are gentle enough to trust around our little one. He's starting to take on some of the daily chores and helps out with special projects when he can.

Have a wonderful day!
Colin

How was your hunt? I didn't go out this year, but my buddy and his family took 3 off our place. The deer have become quite a pest!

35 Dorset and Suffolk ewes and a Dorset ram - all 'twinners'. The Ram was a hoot. Mild mannered ,but, he would sneek up behind you and just lean his head on your leg and push gently - you moved - he weighed 180# !

Nice shots, Colin! We got 1-2" of snow the other day and still have some on the ground. Lows around 15°F here in Central IL. Will be putting the backblade on the 8N soon!

Stay warm, Ed! I'm going to put the chains on the 8N tomorrow, if I can handle the cold. It's going to warm up some, but looks to me like winter is going to stay put.

Yea, when that fella is as big as the shepherd, even a small nudge is noticeable. My older ram butted my grain pail last week. My shoulder and elbow are still a little sore in the morning, a week later. He's usually pretty even keeled, but I guess he really didn't like sharing his oats with the ewes.

We're breeding 18 ewes this year. I had 150% lambing rate last year, with 4 ewe lambs that all singled, unasisted. I'll be happy to have 150% again this year. I have 7 ewe lambs this year. Buildings and land have been a major road block for me, but I had an opportunity to lease indefinitely 20 acres with buildings about 1/4 mile from the home place. This should allow me to build a 40-50 ewe flock, and if I can steadily raise my lambing rates, I hope to be profitable. I'm currently reliant on purchased hay. My own equipment and some hay ground will be the next steps over the coming 4-5 years.
