Help Identifying this Old Tractor

I did not have any tools to get to the number behind the oil filter. I understand that it is behind the oil filter. Next time I go I will bring some tools and grease cleaner.

Any ideas on what year this is. It runs well and the bushhog on it cuts fine. Just picked it up and wanted to do all the maintenance on it.

Here is a link with the photos.

No pictures but you are on the ford n site so assuming you have a ford 9n 2n or 8n you shouldn't need to remove the oil filter the sn should be on the
block just below the head and beside the oil filter.

I think the confusion was the wording ( behind the oil filter) behind meaning to the rear of the tractor not buried under it.

Ken,If you have a 8N,9N or 2N The serial numbers are to the rear of the oil filter. You will have to look hard as they are weakly hand stamped and hard to see.

Sometimes when trying to read an old faintly stamped number, a good trick is to use a digital camera. If you have a small digital camera, set it on the macro (close up) setting and take a picture of the number.

I needed to get the serial number off the engine plate on my MF202 and it is in a hard place to get at. I managed to stick my digital camera in there and take a picture. Then using a picture editing program I was able to edit the pic using "contrast" and light and dark editing features that actually made the number a lot easier to read.

Here a photo of what people mean behind the oil filter. This is where the serial number location is on the 9n/2n/8n

Hi; Not to take over this thread, but I have a 9N with a replacement head that is for a 8N, The difference being that later 8Ns had the generator on the left side and the oil filter mounting bolt holes in the head were a few inches more toward the rear of the tractor. Result, with my mixture of stamping on early block and later head with filter mounting further back, my oil filter obscures the serial number on the block. I believe quite a few tractors have parts that work together but are not factory correct. These old things can make you crazy!
