I just purchased a 8N and there is a large knob on the dash that when pulled ingauges the
pto and when released disengages it. What is this for because the original lever does this as well?

TL,You have a Sherman high/low auxiliary transmission in your tractor,The cable adjustment may be off is why you have a engaged/neutral,it is not shifting from high to low.Check out link.
Sherman Info

It's a sherman step up or step down transmission. Most of these were step ups. To engage the sherman depress the clutch and push the knob all the way in. This will engage your step up or step down depending which trans you have. To activate the standard gears pull the knob all the way out. When you pull your knob all the way out it may not be all the way out and slipping back into the neutral detent which will disengage the pto. Lubricate the cable and gently work it back and forth with the engine off then start your engine and with the main trans in neutral and clutch depressed and pto engaed move you cable out release your clutch slowly. take notice of how fast or slow the pto is spinning then depress the clutch and do the same thing with the knob pushed in. This will tell you which sherman you have and if it's operating correctly. The sherman is not shift on the fly so stop the tractor before engaging. This video might help.

By the way the dash knob does not engage or disengage the pto. The lever on the round plate behind your left foot does that.

It could be for a Hupp auxiliary transmission also. I have a Ferguson TO20 that uses a cable control like you describe, and it's a Hupp - push in for regular range, pull out for low range. The cable on mine enters the bell housing on the top right.

Thanks for the information. I have stripped the tractor down so I can do a nice paint job. I will test the transmission once I get it done. Here in NY the temperature doesn't cooperate with your plans so it may be spring before I get this ready to drive.

Thanks for the reply. I am rebuilding this tractor this winter and painting it as soon as the weather cooperates here in NY. It may be spring before this happens.
