When Engine is Running,Oil is leaking out of a device on bottom of oil pan toward rear. All I see looks like a cotter pin folded against bottom of pan. What is the device? What purpose does it serve? Can it be repaired in place or does oil pan need to be removed?

hat device is a cotter pin to keep the hole in which it is installed from becoming plugged with dirt and grime. the oil is either tans oil or engine oil. engine oil from leaking rear seal, trans oil from from trans seal. neither can be repaired in place. Of the two the trans seal is the easier to replace after you split the trans from the engine. the rear engine seal is much harder to do after you slit the trans from the engine and drop the pan. time to buy a fo-4 service manual.
good luck

hat is a weep hole with cotter pin to vibrate and keep hole open, so that any oil trying to build up in clutch area can drain out. Oil drip here can be from rear crank seal, transmission input shaft seal, or less likely but possible from plugs in rear of engine block, behind flywheel. There are two, the one at rear of engine oil pan and another just ahead of transmission input shaft.

Tap your finger on the cotter and smell it. Trans fluid smells different than engine oil. At least you'll know what to expect before you open it up.
