8n engine block

Hello all,
I am in the process of rebuilding my 1950 8N and I just found this forum.
I have disassembled the engine and discovered that the block is completely roached out behind the sleeves and the intake valve seats are stuck really bad.
I've been able to find one site that sells engine blocks but just a bare block is $1500. That's a lot more than I was expecting to pay for a bare block.
Does anyone know where I might find an 8N block with side mount distributor for a better deal? I'm sure I could find a parts tractor on Craigslist but you never know what you're getting until you tear it apart.
Thanks,
Marc

What do you mean "roached out"? A cracked block? If it ain't cracked, get it stripped all down and boiled out by a local reputable shop. If it is cracked, you can find used blocks on fleabay all the time. Some are rebuilt, some are not, some are short stacks, meaning just the block and no head and other complete parts. A short stack might be the way to go. I'd check local boneyards and Craigslist first for ones nearer to you. Often you can find a 'parts tractor' too. Shipping from out of state often kills these deals though.

Thanks,
When I removed the sleeves the cooling jacket was eroded away in two of the walls. There are two large holes where the coolant is making direct contact with the sleeves. I've put a lot of work in it already, so I might as well do it right.

That is unfortunate. Some folks here think they are bullet proof and never fail  $1500 is way too much for a bare block - you can get a complete engine for that. Something like $300-$500 + shipping depending on the condition and "warranty" would be reasonable. Your best bet is a bone yard or eBay. If you can't find one locally you may have to do some arm twisting on the shipping.

If you are willing to ride 12 hours round trip I have 3 blocks from 3/400... No shipping unless you are willing to pay me $100 for my time to mess with it...

I have a bud going to Valdosta ga sometime soon to a motorcycle drag race if that would help... He would be more than happy to haul it... Nov. 15th

OK - maybe it was rebored larger at one time. The OEM block doesn't have that much wall between the water jacket and the cylinder bores to begin with. I've not seen one like you describe.

Ya'll have a good market down there.
I sold a complete, running, side mount engine for $350 last year.
Water pump, fan, manifold, carb, governor, linkage, oil filter and
lines, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate etc. all included.
Did not include the starter or generator though.
Also sold a 134 block out of a Jubilee this spring for $50.
No cracks or welds, but the crank that was in it had one rod journal
that was beyond repair and the gear end of the cam was broke.
No, I do not have another one of either for sale. Sorry.
Location, location, location.

Did you have a problem with coolant in the oil are did you find that problem after you removed the sleeve. If no problem that block is usable...

I didn't have any issue with coolant in the oil. But combined with the fact that I can't get the intake valve seats out convinced me to find a new block. I'd much rather spend the money and feel good about it. This is the first engine I've ever rebuilt and I've got too much in it to start cutting corners.

I am with you. Unless you are church mouse poor there is no need to cut corners and this is a big corner. The L-head is not a wet sleeve engine and there is no provision for coolant sealing on the liners. Loose sleeves in these engines are a common issue so chances of a coolant leak are not insignificant. Yes, some quality high strength sleeve retainer top and bottom [u:7987be4326][i:7987be4326]may[/i:7987be4326][/u:7987be4326] get you years of trouble free service by but why chance it. If I am going to pour a couple grand into an L-head overhaul it is going to start with an engine block that is 100% free of cracks. They are abundant and inexpensive.

I have one with the same problem, Pulled the sleeve with a puller and found the hole. It is about in the middle of the sleeve. I was trying to find a different block, but if you think it will work with a new sleeve, I will try it.
