I am in the process of restoring my grandfather's 1940 9N. There are some parts that I am trying to track down. One of them is a PTO Cap. It appears that in 1940 it was a cast aluminum version. Does anyone out there have an extra one to sell. Also, I saw that someone might have reproduced some. Any help is appreciated.

here is what the pto covers look like. I have 3 '39's a one '40, for oringinal owner. They are all cast steel.

HiYa Dub-
No N used an aluminum PTO Cover/Cap, p/n 9N-726 and 2N-726. The aluminum one are all the aftermarket style sold today. All 9Ns used a cast iron PTO cap, a different design than the stamped steel 2N-726 cap used thru the 8N Model. The ones sold today have a squared off end, and are a bit longer due to the newer 1-3/8" splined PTO shafts also being a bit longer. If you have a newer replacement PTO shaft with the 1-3/8" spline, the original PTO caps won't work anyway. You need the original 1-1/8" PTO shaft in order to use an original PTO cap.

NOTE: The 9N-726 cap is cast iron; the 2N-726 cap is stamped steel. Both have identical Thread Size of 2-5/8"-12 UN 2A.

Feel free to contact me with any other questions on your 1940 9N restoration. I'm restoring my grandfather's early 1939 9N as a tribute to him and my uncles who owned it. They have long since passed, my grandpa the year before I was born so I never knew him, and my last uncle in 2011. I own it now and all the original Ferguson-Sherman implements they had with it. My email is open.

The authors of that book stated many inaccuracies and this is one of them. The 9N PTO Cap was cats iron, never aluminum. The two left ones in their photo are cast iron. The middle one is the 2N/8N stamped steel version. The far right is the aftermarket aluminum unit with square end used with 1-3/8" PTO shafts.
