Ford 9n won't stay running.

This part was behind the dash. A wire ies in and comes out and turn cherry red and hot when starting it. What is this? What does it do? It will run for 20 minutes and shut off. Its not fuel related. Just put a new starter on. It was running fine before the new starter with a pop start. Just bought this tractor. Its my first kind.

Welcome to the forum!
The part you are referring to is the original ballast resistor.
It is required for the original square can coil on the front mounted
distributor. It is also normal for it to get hot and even glow when
running. What it does is act similar to a thermistor. It has very low
resistance when cold, giving you full voltage to the coil when
starting, then the resistance goes up while running to limit current
and keep the coil and points from burning up while running.

Many of these tractors have been modified over the years.
Is yours still the original 6V, positive ground, generator charged
system, or are you working with a 12V conversion?
Not that those would matter for running, but they might make
a difference on the wiring and how many resistors are required.
When it does die, do you still have spark to the plugs?
