Hey, "67", here's how I convert to an external coil... pretty darned simple, and eliminates the little coiled "spring thingy, and the flat spring high-tension connection, two points that can cause trouble from poor or bent connections.

Den, are the photos not visible to you?

Photobucket has recently relented and is again allowing the FREE limited use of uploaded photos in Forums. (Or, so they say!)

I can view them from here without logging in, will upload them elsewhere if the rest of you can't see 'em.

Bob, Thanks for posting this, but the pictures do not show up, I would really like to see them. Can you post them again? I will try to look in the archives to see them also. Hopefully they are still there. Always interested in stuff like this and seeing how everyone is making it work. Thanks

Not a Photobucket issue. The image URL points to tinypic - e.g. http://i51.tinypic.com/c6gi0.jpg.

Getting a 404 - URL not found. Is tinypic still in existence? I can't reach the home page.

I thought some were on Photobucket. Tinypic was working a while ago, hopefully it's a site issue, and the the photos will be back up later, otherwise, I'll have to find them and upload them again.

I just never got around to your way of doing it someday I will... Were did you get the fiberglass plate for the conversion...

I was just playing with a few coils I had laying around I had to put a coil on a customers Ft MT last week if I had had one of my coil conversions I would have just did away with his 12V front mount coil...

If I had an unlimited supply of original tar filled coils laying around I would use them but all I have is the later version of plastic/epoxy filled coils....

Thanks for the picture. Looks like a really nice job. Can I ask where you got the black plug that the coil wire hooks to and how did you attach it to that distributor cap connection? Thanks

67, as is noted in one of the links, the black "nipple" is cut from a damaged V-8 distributor cap with a small hole saw.

The metal contact in the cap is drilled and tapped for a #6-32 screw to attach the "nipple" and make electrical contact.

Hobo, I used a fiberglas patch kit, several layers of fabric and resin, to seal the top of the cap, and the bottom of the "nipple".

Hobo,Yeh the old tar filled coil was easy to clean out compared to the newer epoxy filled coils.

Well I be dipped in poop... It looked like the fiberglass was 1/2" thick I got a old cap out and see out it works.. When I get caught up again I will play with it... I spec that will be soon another hurricane is headed my way the last one stopped my show...
