Hello everyone, I did some searching on this topic and although I did find some posts, I don't know that it really helped me. Most of the posts I found were about lift arms that are functioning but not working correctly. So, I apologize that this has been covered before.

I have an old 8N tractor it is in fair shape and only gets used a few times a year. It has always had a problem with the lift arms slowly falling from a lifted position. The last time the tractor was used, the lift arms quit working all together.
I followed a tutorial about removing the side cover/inspection plate. I opened up the inspection plate and started the tractor. I have no idea though about what I should or should not be seeing. I did move the lift arm lever and noticed that the internal linkage seems to have some play (but, it's an old tractor and I am assuming that there will be play). Before I pull the whole pump out and rebuild it, I figured that I would post here and see what else I should be doing first. I took a video of the tractor running please check it out and tell me what you think.

Thanks again,

Ryan

You didn't miss anything. That is the precise problem.
Next time I have I will run my hand down the linkage to see if it's broken. It definitely has an odd movement.

The arms will not raise at all. And yes I have raised the arms in the past without problem. Something went wrong. Just trying to figure out what.

I did not see the lift arms move in yer video... Whut did I miss...

If they are not working I would run my hand down to the control valve at the pump and make sure the linkage is hooked up and not came off... If they are contented I would drain the oil and look into the drain plug hole to confirm the control valve is not stuck... About the only other thing I can think of right now is the tension spring that keeps Constant pressure in the lift linkage has broke/came off...

Its a interesting set up maybe someone will post a pix of it...

It is normal that the arms do not stay up when the tractor is not running! They vary on how fast they leak down.

Did you have the PTO lever to the rear engaged position and control lever fully up and engine running with clutch pedal up?

I followed tip #16 and found that I do have a drip coming from the piston area. I wouldn't describe as anything more than a drip every few seconds though. I am not able to attach a heavy implement right now because there is no action on the lift arms at all. Could a leak (the drip) of this type/amount cause the lift arms not to function at all?

The drip isn't a problem. But it might turn into a stream if you put it under pressure. Which means you put an implement on it. Give it a try.

You may not have a pump problem at all.

It might be your lift piston.

See tip # 16.

Post back w/ what you see.
