8N lift arms not going up anymore

I posted this on the "Ford" forum. I also am posting it here, in hindsight, as maybe this is the more appropriate discussion board.

My 8N Ford lift arms used to lift the chains to my 5' belly mower just fine, but the last few years they don't seem to have the power to lift really at all. I haven't used this old girl much at all the last 3-4 years.

Would this likely be a symptom of new packing needed on some internal lift cylinder, or needing a new hydraulic pump, or both? OR some other issue (hydraulic filter, etc.?) Where would one start in diagnosing a fix? How big of a project is each of these?

TIA,

Tom

Most on this forum would probably say you should open up the inspection port and take a look at what's happening when you move your position lever.
You'll also find the "75 tips" on here somewhere that gives some other pointers.
Most likely it's not the pump, but either the lever not opening/closing the valve on the pump or the seals on the piston are shot and need to be replaced.

Like said remove the right side round inspection port and look inside. With the tractor running and the pto running look for dripping coming from the cylinder that is mounted on underside of the cover below the seat also look for turbulence on the surface of the oil if you see turbulence near the back it may be the relief valve leaking by needing to be replaced. you will see some turbulence which is normal from the shaft turning but only slight. also check the front right inside corner near the top cover there is a vertical tube which supplies the top cover and is ported to the cylinder the tube has been known to leak. If you find leaking there is plenty of help here to walk you thru repairs. for 75 tips check out any of Bruce (VA) posts he is a wealth of knowledge as are many others here.
