9n with sherman and howard reduction box

I have said here before that I have a 9n with Sherman and Howard reduction unit and it came from Canada . I am thinking it could be only one in UK but I don't know for sure. is there different types of Sherman hi/low? and what would top speed be??. it needs new fuel tank which I have plans to make from stainless steel and overhaul engine this winter so it will be up and running by Spring and I will be needing plenty advice here

I have Combo & Howard in my 8N. Wins slowest speed race every time. There's only one Sherman Hi/Lo that I'm aware of. Top speed 22-23 MPH. Keep us posted on you S/S tank fabrication - We want pics!

The Sherman Bros Mfg Co. first introduced their aux trans as a Step-Up model because farmers wanted a faster road speed in order to get to and return home after a long day of work. Time is money and the faster they got to their fields, the faster the work got done. ALL 9n's and 2N's only had a 3-speed transmission. One of the 22 new features on the 8N model was a 4-speed transmission, with the 4th gear being the faster road range. The Sherman Step-Up/Step-Down (combo) model, a Step Down, and a reversing model were introduced as well. A Step Down is the hardest to find, and most desired model nowadays. There were no specific USA versions and separate UK versions -all were the same. Kirk(NJ) is the Sherman maestro here so he will probably chime in too. You can get several documents; brochures and parts manuals for FREE download on the other Ford Tractor web site at *N* - *T* - *C* dot com. I sent you an email with the LINK as well because the wise admins won't let me post it here.

Good info. on Sherman combo top speed. I have the Sherman combo in my '51 8N for 65 years. Yup, as a 10 year
old I knew FAST going to fields via gravel roads.
Now, fast forward to age 70 (5 years ago). A friend did some welding on the Wagner loader on my Sherman
equipped '52 8N. He was bragging about the speed of his JD with a loader (newer model I don't remember
year). I challenged him so we went to the gravel road in front of his house.
Very informal GO! We launched and he got about 20' in front of me. I shifted from standard 4th to step
up 4th (I know, not designed for shifting on the fly). BLEW him in the dust at 22-23 mph!
Now I'm 75. Anyone want to race? LOL
ps Be sure that you have good brakes.

You did not say weather your sherman is a step down or a step up or a combo. To Id your sherman see some of my Videos on youtube. Punch in my name Kirk-NJ or sheramn transmission and the Videos will come up. The fastest you will be able to go with the 9n full throttle with the sherman step up is about 18 MPH
Here is one of my videos about the step down sherman with the howard. The last howard I pulled the serial number was 21870 so they did make more than 3 as some people would make you believe. They were made in England so there might be more than you think in the UK. I would suggest more in the ferguson tractor than the ford over there.
