Okay, I'm at wits end here. No matter how hard I try, I cannot get the pin to go into the hole.

Compress drive with vice as shown below. Insert pin part way into Bendix. Slide drive onto starter shaft and drive the pin home.

What Dollar Bill just said...?.

And sometimes it's helpful to grind a slight bevel on the edge of the pin to get it started.

You're welcome.

Resist the temptation to grease the shaft.
In fact, spray it down with brake cleaner.
