split time!!!!

heading to michigan's upper peninsula to grab my 8n, it had a clutch stick prob but i worked that out, it has a combo sherman that will go into upper and lower but not middle, and couple weeks ago i pulled out the starter and notice the ring gear had the teeth of a crack head, so it's split time, this will be new to me and am actually looking forward to it, i've been following this site regularly however that 75 tips has cut my questions down to about nothing
you will all be hearing from me

Glad you found the tips helpful.

Splitting the tractor & replacing the clutch is covered nicely in the I&T FO4 manual. (see tip # 39)

See tips 12 & 59 before you split it.

Unless you've done it before, don't try to replace the ring gear yourself. Just let the shop do it.

Have the flywheel resurfaced when they do the ring gear.

I'd have the clutch & p/p rebuilt. And I'd replace the t/o & pilot bearings & front transmission seal while I was in there.

Use the main shaft as your clutch alignment tool.

If you don't have a local rebuild shop, try these guys:

Automotive Manufacturers Inc
2400 N Lombardy St Richmond, VA 23220

(804) 321-6861

They do mail order work. They rebuild carbs, clutches, pressure plates, water pumps, alternators, generators, starters & reline brakes.

If you prefer new parts, do NOT order them off of eBay or buy them at TSC. Get parts (and the manuals) from this site or nnalert's.

Let me know if you want a hand or run into a bind Dave.
It's not a bad job, but as with all things the first time, you might
run across questions. I know a machinist in the Sheridan area
that resurfaced my flywheel and did a great job. He's done many
engines and valve jobs/heads for me. From 12 to 600+ HP.
I'd be happy to pass on his information to you if you want to
have that work done or I can provide him yours if you prefer.
Email, call or text. Whatever works best for you at the time.
Good luck with the trip. Should be beautiful up there right now! :)
