52 8N won't start

Getting a little frustrated, need some advice on what I am missing. My 8N for the last 15 years has always started immediately. It sets for periods of time up to 6 months, but that never affected it. This last resting period it will not start and only back fires occasionally. I assumed it was electrical and replaced plugs, wires, coil, points, condenser, dist. cap and rotor, with the same results. Got compression stroke using finger over #1 cylinder, set timing at 4deg. BTDC and set point opening with OHMs meter. Left distributor just loose enough I could make slight turns while trying to start, still the occasional backfire is all I get. I converted this tractor to 12 volt 15 years ago. Since it was running when it was parked I have to assume nothing with the timing chain could have changed which leads me to fuel. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem simply from the carburetor? Also this is brand new fuel.

You haven't eliminated spark as the problem .

Start over w/ your troubleshooting.

Check for spark and fuel. (see tip # 13)

You need to answer 2 questions before you do anything else:

With the bolt in the carb bowl removed and the gas on, will the fuel flow fill a pint jar in less than 2 minutes?

Next, get out your adjustable gap spark checker * , open the gap to 1/4", hook it up, turn the key on and crank the engine. Does the spark jump 1/4"? Post back with the answers.

And do not buy a new part for the tractor until you can answer this question: how do I know the part on the tractor is defective?

If you have a spark that jumps 1/4" and good fuel flow, no telling what that gas did sitting in the carb, so try starting fluid directly in the carb throat.

* Don't own an adjustable gap spark checker? Buy one! Not a test light! Until then, take an old plug, open the gap 1/4" ground it to the head & look for spark. It?s not the color of the spark that counts; it?s the distance it jumps.

Kimsguy,Drain your carburetor bowl it may be full of water after setting, drain it out so the new gas can get in there.

Loosen the rubber hose that connects the air cleaner snorkel to the carb inlet. Slide it backward and expose the inlet neck of the carb.

Choke off. throttle 1/3 open. Trans in neutral.

Use your carb cleaner can with straw, and while cranking the engine spritz a short burst of carb cleaner into the inlet neck of the carb. If the engine runs and dies, you have a fuel obstruction. If the engine just pops and backfires, you have a ign timing problem.

Any time one of my tractors that ran good when parked, now won't start after setting several months a common problem seems to be invisible corrosion on the points. Fold a dollar bill or piece of cereal box, draw it through closed points and try again.

That's wonderful you are still 1/16 short... It does make a difference confirm it then you can move on...

Bruce got the dislike for a lighted spark checker from me I don't have much use for them other than it proves the event is happening it does not prove you have enoufh spark to fire the event... It does have its place in a mans tool box to confirm the event is happening it does not confirm a kill...

Why an adjustable spark tester is MANDATORY it confirms a kill it should pop every time the event happens no now and again EVERY TIME... Any other way you are guestamating it will eat your lunch one day I grantee it...

You are getting free advice mine is to buy a spark checker then this post will not go on for days and days with every wild arse guess known to man rule spark out without a doubt...

BTW water in the fuel BTDT it will kick you arse...
