Aloha;

The ball joint on the end of the drag link keeps smacking the alternator and damaging it. He mows a pretty uneven field and has a lot of travel on the front axle. Any suggestions for a smaller alternator, or one with an internal fan? Would extending the front wheels out further help?

So I went back today with a camera and took some pics. It looks nothing like the service manual page 17. Near as I can tell, there is no king pin, (pivot or axle pin) So what's keeping the front axle in place? Did someone Frankentractor this?[/img]

Okay, this is bizarre.

Just got back from my friend's place, looking at the tractor front end. I see NO King, Axle, or Pivot pin at all. Just a big hole with what looks to be 3 tapped holes in a line under it. Shined my flashlight thru from the back, while looking down the front, nothing in there, can see right thru to the front of the crank.

A WTH moment for sure.

Okay, thanks.

That helps a lot.

Now, I just need to get over there and see which one it is.

in my parts catalog, the kingpin is identified as item 28 in figure 37 on page 24.

note that there are several variations specified, depending on your particular configuration.
We must have different catalogs.

Mine shows the front axle group on pages 1-16 thru 1-19

I don't find a listing in the parts catalog for "kingpin"

Do you know the part number?

Do you know the year and model so I can check my local parts houses?

Same here. Had to replace my king (axle) pin due the tie rod hitting the alternator. My early 8N also had a spindle bushing that had dropped down inside the spindle housing, which created a lot of slop in the steering.

In the process of repairing all that I bought a new belt, same length, but I noticed that with the new unstretched belt the alternator rested higher up in it's adjustment than it did before wi the old stretched out belt.

I'm wondering if replacing the belt would've taken care of the alternator tie rod problem all along. But, the tractor steers so much better now I'm still happy. It was not a very costly repair job either.

I had the same problem replaced the king pin (hardly worn), found I had too long of a fan belt and changed that but it still hit the generator and pushed it up so my fan belt wouldn't stay tight. Ended up widening the front end and problem solved.

Ya might wanna check your distributor cap too. If RAD ROD and/or drag link is hitting the alternator, your kingpin may be worn too as Soundguy said. If so, your cap will show the #2 nipple to be cracked where it hits.

There are smaller alternators that work better on a 9N. I have one on mine, made in S Korea, probably from a Hunda works good 3 wire like a Delco. One for a Ford Ranger pickup is smaller and will work. I also had issues with Delco hitting steering rod.

ya, mine was too, so i bought a longer belt. i had to put the belt into the pulley first and then try to line up the pivot bolt and get it in with the 44". silly me, i thought "3 inches longer = alternator moving out an inch and a half." *WRONG* it seemed more like two and a half. i have a 45" now, but if you're hitting it with a 44, ya, what they ^^^^^ said :)

The real fix is a kingpin and bushing.

The hard band aid is widening front or smaller alt, or shorter belt.

The easy band aid, as indicated is welding a big nut or piece of bar stock to the axle stop area to mechanically limit travel.

It's right up against the manifold.

It has a 44" belt (Gates 6944)

aloha jk :)

how much clearance do u have between the alternator and the manifold? i had a similar problem that i was able to cure by putting a shorter belt on it.

it was my own fault to begin with, i was the idiot who got the belt that was too long
Jklightner, A shorter belt would move the alternator closer to the engine.Or weld t short piece of 1/2" key stock on the axle under the stop on the right side to limit axle upward movement.
