Whats the best way to seat rings, just run the engine. put in new pistons and sleeves, double check clearance, still get some blue smoke, valve guides ok.

somewhat disappointed

i was always told plowing was the best way to break in an engine. i am planning on overhauling both of my tractors. a wd and a d17. i was worrying about if i had to do some other kind of work before plowing. especially pto work. on my mini vans overhaul they had me run it for 500 miles then change oil and it would be ok.both my tractors use and leak oil so not having heads off i imagine they will need complete overhauls. by the way ,how much would professional overhauls cost? thanks in advance.

Did you replace sleves or did you put new rings on old sleves? If the latter did you do something to bust the glaze? Just a thought.

Your mileage may vary

Hi greg,
If your local tractor dealer has a pto dyno, that would be the ideal method of break-in. Otherwise, operate the engine at various RPM's and loads. Periodically load the engine heavily, but only for short periods of time(around 10 seconds max). Don't work the engine too hard and don't let it overheat. Although most engines are not broken in properly, few people experience any resulting problems. Good luck...Al English
