I found Ed Douglas' post on blasting cabinets very interesting because I would really like to buy one, but I have a question:

First, I'll mention that I do have a large, fairly powerful air compressor (20 SCFM @ 95 PSI).

Looking at the cabinet blasters displayed on ebay.com:

Is there a really big difference between a cabinet blaster costing around $250.00 vs. one that costs $1,000.00+ ?

Thanks very much for your opinions.

I just bought the bigger one that HF sells for about $180, and it seems decent, and a good price with 20% off coupon. Be prepared to put a lot of screws into assembly. The panels all have seals but I plan on using rtv silicone. They give 3 extra clear plastic sheets to take wear off glass.

Before you put it together, check out the YouTube video I recommended below and consider the upgrade kit by Tacoma Company.

It just depends on how much restoration work you are going to do. I've got a lot of restoration work ahead of me and I have that $1K Skatblast cabinet and love it. As the guys are saying you need a big ole vacuum cleaner on it with a very fine filter to keep your shop fairly clean. Those cabinets don't leak. Mine only came with one light. I just blasted a set of 4 2 piece OE wheels off of my 53 3600 AD truck. They were a mess. No telling how long they set on the ground with flat tires. I ended up adding another flood light, I use 2 100 W floods and wired the lights into a duplex switch, so I can flip the switch to kill the lights and shop vac while I let the compressor rest a bit. Have to replace the window with a plastic screen every 10 hrs or so. Very handy, and wouldn't do restoration work without it.

You will struggle with air but can make do it will just take longer you will have to stop and wait on the air pressure to build up right regular... My smaller compressor is twitch yours I have to let it catch up from time to time... It will purt-neer keep my big compressor in a continuous state of running but I don't have to stop and wait on it... I don't know how big the tip is on my gun but its a Big'N I don't know but would figure tip size plays a big roll in air consumption...

Mine came with Saran Wrap covers you cut off a roll they would not last long at all so I went to Lowe's and had them cut me up a $40 sheet of Plexiglas. So far I have been satisfied with the PG.
I guess you caught it when I posted I tape PG to the inside of the outer just yank it off and install another PG. I would think the reason yours eat the glass up so quick is you are so close to your work the sand eats it up... I guess that's one plus for the big'N the other is its easier to keep the gun pointed away from the window and the sand falls away from the work...

The last time the cookie guy used mine it made a mess I have never had a mess it just don't make one nor any dust. I found the filter in the vacuum was stopped up cleaned it now the cabinet has good suction....

I never slowed down when I went past a HF store I knew their blaster was not the one I wanted...

"Are you using that cabinet w/o modifications?"

I have one of those Harbor Freight cabinets. The red bench
top type, but I built a stand to hold it at chest height and
added casters to the stand so I can roll it around the shop.

Anyway, when I bought it, the reviews said it leaked horribly.

That's because it is a sheet metal design with assembled corners.

Their recommendation was to seal all the seams with RTV.

I did that when I brought it home. It still leaks like a sieve.

Even around the window and the gloves.

The shop is a mess every time I use it. Which is quite often.

In its defense, for ~$120, it has held up for, I would guess,
close to 10 years now. I use it at least once a week but I will
never buy another one that isn't welded seam construction.

They have no light or provisions for a light. I added my own.

These also have plastic "Saran Wrap" style covers for the glass.

The covers are hard to find in the right size and a PITA to install.

I bought a roll of stick on plastic and cut my own to size.

I've pretty much given up on seeing what I'm doing while I'm

blasting. I open the door and check it, memorize where I
missed, put it back in, blast again, check it again. Another PITA.

But, not enough to make me spend $1000 plus on a new one.

Yet.

I got the HF blasting cabinet on sale w/ a 25% off coupon. Seems like I paid $150 or so. I bought it w/ the full intention of upgrading it because more than one source said it was worthless..... .except for the cabinet itself. Check out the YouTube videos by Alverez regarding the upgrade kit from Tacoma Company. The kit was about $300. Lights, foot pedal, vacuum hose attachment, regulator & gun & hoses. So, for about $500, I think I have a $1000 cabinet. Works just fine.

I was looking a little at table top units a few days ago. I found some sites that have reviews. A common fault found with some of the lower cost ones is that they leak a lot, or the valve is no good, or the gloves don't last long.
