I was able to prime the tractor yesterday. It was showing over 10lbs of pressure. I was doing a happy dance, but then, I noticed all the oil pouring on the ground..

It was pumping up and out of the oil filter canister!

I took the lines and blew them out with some low air pressure. That didnt seem to be the issue. Then I ran it for a little bit without the oil filter and it worked fine..

So question is do I have the wrong oil filter? I bought it when I thought it was a 1940 9N. Maybe it needs a filter for a later model 8N?

I have some pictures in another thread of the oil canister.
Let me know if I can provide any other details.

It has a gasket. It is pretty thin.

I should be able to just set the cover on a table to check if its warped or not, correct?

Also, when I stuck my had in the canister to feel around. I noticed there was a rubber seal like on the oil filter at the bottom. Should that be there, orbeas it left behind from the last filter?

" I should be able to just set the cover on a table to check if its warped or not, correct?"

A counter top would be better.

" Should that be there, orbeas it left behind from the last filter? "

Remove it.

And better still, take the entire canister off for a good soaking. If you have never done that, you will be amazed at the solid crud in the bottom.

The only thing else that is supposed to be in there is a 'milk stool' spacer in the bottom.

The same filter fits all N's. (see tip # 64)

As Bob said, it's likely a gasket issue. Either it was crimped, you've got 2 in there or crud in the seat. Or worse case, the cover is warpped.

I've been reusing the older, thicker gaskets for years. The newer ones are much thinner than I like.

Do you have a correct gasket under the filter cover, installed without it getting out of place?

If so, filter cover MAY be damaged or warped.

I put a little grease on bottom of lid so gasket stays in place.
