ok guys , new guy posting for help. I have a 46 2n ford that I,m rebuilding the gov. I got a kit and am disassembling the drive gear. I pressed it off and there is supposed to be a fiber washer between the gear and bearing housing, BUT, no fiber was on it. I cant find one to order. anyone know the size I can make one?
Without it ,it looks like the ball assembly will be that much lower in the housing.
Anyone have any knowledge of this?

The was a post on here a short while ago about this washer. That being said, the part # is 357319S.

A quick GOOGLE search will turn up all sorts of places to buy one, even fleabay.
For future reference ...

I just ordered the #357319s fiber washer. some info shows no washer and some do. don't know which is right. The ford FO-4 manual shows that its not there. but ford parts show it for a 9n,2n and 8n. there also is a little steel thrust washer in the parts drawing #356491-s. its under the rear shaft bushing in the housing. Its a little confusing to use the fibre washer or not?

I take John Smith's word as GOSPEL pertaining to these tractors, and he states it is only used on later 8N govs with tach drive.

On the other hand, I've seen all sorts of older N's that had the washer in the governor.

NO way of knowing if that was factory or if someone OH'ing it over the years thought it should be there!

I would seem as long as the rear steel thrust is there, that's all that's needed.

On the other hand, installing the fiber washer isn't going to HURT anything.

I have wondered, myself, if it also served to limit how oil was thrown around, as it it LARGE compared to what would be needed simply for a thrust washer.

The little steel thrust washer behind the rear shaft bushing in the governor housing serves as a thrust stop for the governor shaft. When the shaft is back against the thrust washer (normal operation) there will be a gap between the drive gear and the housIng. When the side distributor governor was made the tach drive came out the back end so there was no place for a thrust washer. So, they put a fiber washer of the desired thickness between the gear and housing. That washer is only used on the side distributor governors. It would serve no purpose on a front distributor governor. But you can put one in there if it makes you feel good, it won't hurt anything.

Never take anything as gospel - we all get it wrong sometimes!
