What engine does a UB Special gas have? Is it the 283 or something else? Are there other engines that will bolt up with no modifications? I have been wanting a Special gas for some time and havent had much luck finding one. I have a line on one with a locked up engine and wondered if it would be easy to find a used running engine for it?

Both posters below make good points. If you want it to look pretty original you need a later model engine. I am not sure how much difference there is in between a 5 star engine and a UBspecial engine, but I am sure it would look closer to original than a gas engine from a plain 'U' for example.
The older engines will probably bolt in to the transmission and work with the exception that the hydraulic pump won't bolt to a lot of the older front covers because there is no place for it. (I am thinking that on a UBspecial it should mount below the water pump, not behind it.) There may also be an issue with the water return manifold not aligning with the radiator inlet.
If your tractor doesn't have power steering and if you just want something to ride around and show, I am thinking a lot of the older U 283 engines could be made to work.
