How effective should the brakes be on a GVI? I cannot lock a wheel when turning, nor can I skid wheels on gravel. Linings look thick enough, but hard and possibly glazed. Brakes are adjusted to a hard pedal. Maybe I need new linings?

Some of those old tractors didnt have the best of brakes. IF everything is proper then they will work. However most of the Molines I drove of that era had substandard breaks

I don't own a GVI, but I am thinking that they are heavy enough that if your brakes can slide the rear wheels, it would also probably be
possible to strip a tooth off a bull pinion too. (Now I am thinking the brakes are on the pinion shaft and not on the axle. like they are on
a U.)

From the 2 G series I have had, the brakes are good
enough to stop the tractor from rolling and provide some
guidance in the field. They will not lock up the wheels in
most cases.

Thanks for the replies. I have a UB Special with similar brakes which are more effective. Neither the GVI or UB are as good as my U with properly adjusted shoe brakes.
