UTS-D Live PTO clutch.

I'm working on a '56 Moline UTS-Diesel. Oil was leaking in the brakes and Live PTO clutch.

The Live PTO clutch was seized on and I don't know if it was ever used and definitely had not been used in the last 25 years. I don't think the PTO was ever used on this wheatland tractor.

The question I have is- Does the live PTO clutch lever ever lock into the disengaged position like the main hand clutch? I have not seen, once I got it disassembled, any device to lock it disengaged.

The handle is very stiff and takes quite a bit to pull back. Is that normal? Did they use a friction fit to hold the clutch handle back and the clutch disengaged?

Was the clutch only meant for temporary use and you had to hold it disengaged?

LPTO is spring loaded seetup. When lever pulled back it decouples pinion shaft just enough to engage or disengage pto. Usually seals leak and cause clutch pack
to slip when not supposed to.

Thanks. I have only used that style of Live-PTO clutch on an allis-Chalmers before. On those they do snap into and stay in the disengaged position.
 
Technically, it just stops the ground drive by releasing the left bull pinion from the pinion shaft. This stops the forward motion of the tractor. The regular pto just stays engaged.

I am under the impression it was mainly for like on a Combine where if the operator could tell it was becoming overloaded, he could stop the forward travel long enough for the backup could clear itself.
 
It slips the bull pinion shaft. Have several and worked on them. Early U with out disc brakes there is a service bulleton have to add and change bull pinion shaft. We had on on a U diesel in 60's and did not work great on combine or swather. Have few parts ones. Made by Austo Lambert and are same clutches used in Motrac crawler steering clutches.
