Another M602 brake question

I finally got the brake plates out with the oil seals and was surprised how thin the gaskets are. I measure them at 0.004 but expect they were 0.005 when new. I usually make my own gaskets and am not sure I'll be able to get paper that thin. I guess it's acceptable to use slightly thicker paper and remove shims to compensate (0.40 of shims on one side and 0.060on the other)? And would you ever consider removing a 0.010 shim from each side to allow for wear, or better to leave well alone?

Thanks in advance.

Those shims adjust your backlash for the ring and pinion. You can't be willy nilliy about this. Did you check the backlash before you took it apart?? Better have it the same as it was before you took it apart.

Thanks MMDL. no, I didn't think to check the lash - my plan was to put everything back exactly as it had come out. I've now found some suitable paper that measures exactly 0.005, so should work out okay. Appreciate your advice.

You are most welcome. It is good to know if you really helped someone with knowledge gained over the years. Many times when you answer someones question it is the last one on the thread and you never know if the party got his problem fixed or not, No, YES, NO or So long.
