JT transmission

Getting ready to drain and replace the transmission oil in my '37 JT. There is no obvious place to fill it, and the owner's manual doesn't say either. I'm assuming I probably have to remove the flat cover on top of the transmission? Said cover measures approx. 8" x 9" or so.
Otherwise, the plug to check the oil level is on the right side. I suppose I could fill it through there, but that seems like it would be a PITA.

Next question: I know this has been beat to death here, but is it OK to use GL-5 in it? Most of what you buy is GL-5 these days. This thing is lucky to get much more than an hour's running time on it a year, so I'm assuming it shouldn't be a problem. The main thing is that there's something in it.
I've got a couple gallons of 85/140 sitting around here. Thought I'd put that in and pick up a pail of 80/90 and fill it the rest of the way. Should be OK, right? I think the book says it holds 7 gallons total.
