UNI System Transmission issue

I am new to this Forum and I originally posted this on the combine section. One of the members recommended I post this on the Minneapolis Moline section being the UNi System was developed by MM

We recently resurrected an old 703 power unit with a combine attached to it. We ve actually had pretty good luck with Combine, and have been learning how to set up and operate it. It is a good machine to handle weedy crops.
I just ran into a problem, that I am hoping someone can help me.
We had issues with the clutch master cylinder, that was causing it to shift pretty hard. I was able to replace clutch master cylinder and cure that issue. My problem now is, I cannot get it into reverse. I disconnected the linkage from the transmission, to make sure the linkage was not binding up, and it was free. It acts like it starts to go into reverse, but the gears will just grind. The shifter probably moves one forth the distance necessary to go into reverse.

if someone can enlighten me on what to look for, or suggest someone else that I can talk to I would appreciate it.

Thank you! Jim

MM did not build a unit like what you are talking about. However i have dealt with several New Idea Uni s. If you have gears grinding it would indicate that the clutch is not fully releasing. Having said that, you would also have the same problem in a forward gear. But in reverse you are normally engaging more gears. Did you fully bleed the clutch system after you installed the new master system???? How much free travel do you have on the clutch pedal? How quick does the unit move when you let up on the pedal?

Thank you for the response,

Regarding the gear grinding, it only occurs when I try to
put it in reverse gear and as I release the clutch. (I
cannot get full movement of the shifter lever in the
reverse gear. I was hoping by letting up on the clutch it
might drop fully into gear. All I get is grinding when
letting up on the clutch. )

We fully bled the clutch system after changing the
cylinder

There is about 1/2 inch or less of free travel to disengage
the clutch. When I let up on the pedal, it will start moving
when the pedal is about 1/2 way back. Clutch pedal
travel feels great with the new cylinder. We were doing
some aggressive gear shifting when the clutch cylinder
was failing.

Sounds like you did things right. Have you tried to shift into reverse without the motor running?
Unhook the linkage again and 1- Does the shift lever and linkage travel the full distance. 2- can you move the shift rail by hand the full distance. You my have to jack up the right wheel and rotate it to line up gears. You may have bent or distorted something earlier when cyl was bad.

I did try shifting with the engine off. The linkage when
disconnected does travel the full distance quite easily.

When moving the shift rail by hand , it will slide one
direction (into first gear position) and back to center
detent position, but will only slide about 1/4 of the way
from center detent to reverse direction. It feels like there
is a hard stop. I have not jacked up a wheel yet, but I
have put it in first gear with the engine running, let out
the clutch slightly to just start slight forward motion, put
in the clutch to allow it to roll back slightly and try to shift
into reverse while rocking back with no luck. Basically I
was on some soft ground and was able to rock it slightly
with the forward gears working, but could not get it to
slide into reverse. I am going to pull a cover plate this
week and see if I can tell what is going on. I will let you
know if I find anything.

Thank you for the input!
