Jetstar 3 - removing the head?

I'm trying to remove the head of my tractor, because there's something leaking. I think it's a cracked head, but can't be sure how bad the damage is until it's removed. I've been removing bolt by bolt hoping that I could figure it out, but I'd really like some advice to help me. Can y'all look at the photos I took and suggest what to do next? I don't know what has to be removed or what can stay.

because thee is something leaking leaking where? outside inside into the oil or what? if in the oil the first thing would ahve been to
remove the oil pan and go from there. parts and gaskets are expensive to experiment with. dont know what your asking. you got a long ways to
go to get he heads off yet.

Both head come off together as they are connected together by water tubes same as blocks. Top plate comes off first.

also that cover over the heads comes off independently then you pull each head up seperatly

Oh thank you, now I've made some progress and feel a bit better. I was starting to lose hope. Now I've got that cover off so I've actually managed to accomplish something. Will continue working & see what else I can do

go on ebay and search for MM-201 I&T manual. Several there for under $30. General manual for many models but it will get you started.

Also look for an owner's manual and a Repair (parts) catalog. Look around as prices vary a lot.

water tube where?? M.M. brags about removing only one head due to separate heads for 2 cylinders. i have had heads off of the U'S and sure dont need to remove both. why is the jet star 3 different? how would you even remove both at once when they are separate heads.? i am asking.

MM used same block/head configuration since 445 through to end of production in 1970. Gas or diesels 165/206/220's all have small water pipes between blocks and heads. Whenever heads/blocks removed pipes and O rings have to be changed or will leak.

What about propane?
Mines LP

i still cant see how to remove both at the same time when they are separate heads. only way would be lift both the same amount till both are off. and you sure cant do that with one pair of hands.

Exactly how it is done grab a head in each hand and lift. Water tubes between heads and jugs. Not mounted external like the big engine

I pull them all the time by hand. Stand over and lift whole head set. Then do blocks same way. No way possible to remove head individually unless somehow could get studs all out and slide off end but would never get O rings and tubes in place without leaking.

that is exactly what i am asking. must be a minnie mo screw up. that throws there advertizing out the windows! unless paul bunyan lifts one in each hand.

Rustred; The MM statement you are referring to has nothing to do with the 206 engine.

You can pull those heads with manifold and top plate in place like it is in the photo. Make your self a bar with four holes to go over the rocker studs. Or use chains. and hook to a floor crane. Put a little lifting pressure on the engine. The head gasket and friction on the head studs are holding it together. Sharpen the points on some old sickle sections and tap about four on each side in the gasket area between the head and the block. A little bit at a time all the way around. This will break the seal between the two. May have to increase the lifting pressure on the crane. (Chain hoist under a tree will do the same thing.)

I've got the manifold off. Sorry, I didn't see your reply until finally getting it off. I still can't manage to get the head off. Lifting, pulling, shoving, tapping with a hammer, chiseling around the edges, nothing. No movement. I'm not certain if I should be trying to get the top "half" to lift up (there's a seam all the way around) or all the way from the bottom. I just don't know.

When removing heads may have to use lubricant on studs. May be rusted on exhaust side. LP seem to stick worse. Did gas one
yesterday and was also tough.

Like I said make a bar to fit the rocker studs. Use a floor crane or chain hoist. Lift enough to see the tractor start to take pressure off of the tires. Chisel is too blunt, need to use something thin like sickle sections and grind to knife edge on the point.

PS That rope has too much give to it. need bar like I said or chain and lift tractor. Bar will put more even lifting all the way around.

I've had to resort to following in the past:

1) Remove all of the spark plugs.
2) Using a piece of wood and a small sledge hammer, insert the
piece of wood into the exhaust ports and spark plug cavities and
strike with 3 pound sledge hammer.
