To all who have responded previously
here's an update on my KTA restoration
project.
Removed the head a couple weeks ago. Quite
the chunk of iron. Had 2 helpers just to
be safe.
Valves are out and look good. 2 seats are
rough but I should be able to clean them
up and then I will lap them all.
I've been cleaning up the cylinders and
pistons and last Thursday started to free
them. Got a slight amt of movement the
first day using a chunk of aluminum as my
driver. Mushroomed the top of it pretty
well. On the second day I was able to get
everything moving and she's now very free
spinning.
2 cylinders are a little rough but I think
they will be OK for a parade.
Still not sure where the water in the pan
came from but I'm suspecting the head
gasket. The head bolts didn't seem as
tight as I would expect for 5/8 nuts. I'm
going to fill the radiator to the point
where I have the block full to see if I
can detect any leakage.
The mag looks good so far.
Will drop the bottom cover off the pan
next to check the oil pump screen.
So far so good.

Head should be pressure checked as well. Had one with similar issues. Changed head gasket twice and seeped. Changed head and solved problem.

1) The valve seat shown will need to be ground. Unless there has been recent valve work done all valves and seats need ground. 2) I would be willing to bet that you have rings that are stuck to the pistons. Pull pan, remove pistons and check. Also check piston to cylinder clearance. 3) also have valve guides knurled, may be so worn that they need replaced. As old as it is, do it right and be done with it.

"Is this something I can do with a machinists straight edge or must it be done by a machine shop?"
You can do that at home with your straight edge and feelers.
Valve seat inserts are already there. Nice!
My older 21-32 (G predecessor) had seats installed in the past. What a relief to regrind.
