Draining Ampli-Torq on 604

I'm sure I have read about this here in the past but can't find the post. If I understand correctly the oil supply for the Ampli-Torq spills over from the gearbox? I'm replacing the input seal. There is a drain plug on the left-hand side of the AT compartment. I'm assuming this will evacuate the oil from that compartment but leave the gearbox oil. I will have to drain the gearbox eventually because I also need to replace the seal on the output shaft from the transfer case, but want to keep it simple at this stage, if I can.

Yes you pretty well have it figured out. Main shaft in transmission gears sling oil to a trough in the side of the case which drains forward to the torc compartment. This keeps the torc at a higher level than the transmission and rear end. Small drain plug sorta below clutch pedal drains torc, easiest to refill through adjustment hole.

Thanks, Chris. I pulled that plug late today and drained the ampli-torc compartment. Should be able to get the front seal out now without any problems. I had wondered why the level plug for the ampli-torc is higher than the gearbox. Appreciate the explanation. Your comments indicate the gearbox and differential share the same oil? I hadn't really investigated that and wasn't sure.

Ampli-torc is splash lubricated and sits on the input shaft. If Ampli-torc compartment ran at the same level as the differential it would never get lubricated because it would be sitting above the oil. Upper shaft of transmission gets lubricated by the gears on the pinion shaft flinging oil upwards.
