What oil filter for UB Special?

On the UB Special gasoline powered tractor I brought home last weekend, I went to change the oil filter which is accessed by opening a cover plate on the left rear side of the oil pan. The NAPA books showed #1111 = Wix 551111 = MM KE 5905. This filter has a long ~1.25" tube extension at each end, making the filter too long for this application.

The filter I took out was Wix 551114 = NAPA 1114 which is discontinued, not available anymore. This filter is larger in diameter (4 1/2") and longer than the #1111, but with very short end tubes. This #1114 filter is definitely a bigger filter than the #1111.

I do not think the previous owner ever changed the oil filter as he thought this engine had no oil filter. He had owned this tractor since 1978! His owner/operator manual showed the external filter of the older U series, and he had bought the hardward to put it on the engine, but it would interfer with the location of the steering shaft, so it never got installed.

What are you UB Special owners using for your oil filter?

Thanks.....

Paul,
Have you tried AGCO directly? The UB Special parts book says 10A6865 for oil filter. This crosses over to older #'s 10R751 or GE5088. The KE5905 is for the UB gas series and not the UB Special tractors. The Wix and Baldwin sites don't show a cross reference to any of these numbers or the old NAPA number either.

Paul, my old Baldwin filter book shows the 10A6865 filter as being their number T58-M for the Special. If you want I can call my supplier and see if they still carry it. I have a half dozen of those big boys in the original prairie gold but now-a-days they are worth way more as a display piece than to filter oil. Hope this helps. Jim

Wisc Cowman,

I went into the AGCO dealer yesterday afternoon and had them show me the KE 5905. It does not fit! Their computer told them to sub that filter for the 10A6865. The end holes are different diameter, and both the length and OD are different. I could probably make it work by cutting off the long nipples on both ends and then shimming up the too large center holes, and end up with about 1/2 of the filtering media that the correct filter has. In my book, that is a lousey solution. So the KE 5905 is still on their shelf.

Thanks for your reply.

The M series tractors used a filter that fit in the pan of thier 336 engines. My M5 book calls for a 10A10424 and my M670 book shows 10A10423. Wix doesn't cross the 424 number and if you use their lookup feature they both show to use a 51118. You might want to look at them and see if they will work for you. Also the 445s use a Wix 51115 in a canister under the engine. It is somewhat smaller than the 51118. HTH

Paul, did you ever find an oil filter? A friend called me asking if I knew what kind it took as he had not been able to figure out what kind of filter it takes.

I use a NAPA 1118 which is about an inch shorter than a 1114. I cut extra threads on the stem so the retaining nut will tighten down.
