The original subject was Re: GB Diesel help.

Ive got a gbd Ive started pulling with and Id like some more info on how exactly to advance the timing correctly/accurately on it. If you could shoot me an email Id appreciate it

Unless you have a PTO dyno to test your changes, I'd use the stock timing spec. Most tractors I've played with on the dyno the stock setting works best. Engine may sound better when advanced, but usually the power drops, and engine might start harder too.

Ok around what rpms do these engine start to float valves? Its running about 1750 right now. Stock springs.

Hopefully you have the Roosa Master pump, which is likely considering the RPM you note. Set the timing to factory spec. I have a dyno to tune with. I set mine adjusting it to max power live. Ended up at factory spec.

You dont need to worry about floating the valves. Without timing advance in the pump, you will not get the RPM high enough to cause a problem. If you are looking for more power, study your intake system, there is cheap power to be had there. The next step is 504 cu in jugs and pistons. You can increase the fuel delivery a little, but there is not much extra adjustment with the stock parts MM specified.

Its still got the Bosch pump on it. And Im sure its turning that Ive checked it with multiple tachs. And Ive upped the fuel already. Thinking about messing with the intake for more air. And yes I might consider the jugs and stuff when I restore the tractor. Will that also help with higher compression ratio?

If you use 425 heads with 504 jugs, you will get slightly higher compression. But you really wont see much difference other than maybe a little better starting.

My recommendation would be to go to a 504 and switch to a Roosa Master pump if you want to be serious about it.
