MM Z Oil Gear removal

I need to remove the oil gear off the bottom of the magneto shaft on my MM Z. That sucker is on pretty tight and I have 0 leverage to pull it off. The clearance is too tight to pry it off, and I tried putting a bolt on a jack to push the shaft up through the gear with no luck. I thought of taking a torch to it to heat it up a bit, but I am a bit nervous using a torch in an area with drippy oil.

Has anybody done this? Any ideas?

Its been a while. I think you need to remove the distribuitor or at least take the bolts out.
then you can bump the shaft upward about 1/16 then the woodruff key in the shaft hits the block.
Then you can bump the shaft back down and then you have a gap above the gear where you can pry it off.

Of course, you loose the timing of the engine doing this. So be sure you mark which way the rotor button in the distribuitor is pointed before you take the bolts out.

There is bolt in front that has to removed. Use a brass drift to drive out. Gear gas two 1/8 Woodruff keys. Be careful not to burr as shaft is soft.

Gears are same as used on TC 12-20/17-28 and all Z's and R. Mag shaft only common to R/Z. Distributor shaft same on all R/Z Jetstars/U302 series except the diesels. Cams all same on 206 gas or diesel Z R's.

Thank you T.R.K.! Your post helped immensely! I bought a cheap spark plug gauge at Harbor Freight and jammed them above the gear and knocked the center shaft. I kept adding feeler gauges until the gear popped off.
