Was driving an A4T-1600 yesterday and was in Low 4th. I turned it to the right and in doing so the rear two wheels locked up and
skidded. I stopped it and placed it in reverse and they turned free. I placed back in forward and it operated freely.

Any idea as to what may have caused this?

Emergency brake was off. No differntial wheel lock.

Did those have mechanical brakes or hydraulic? The mechanical brakes of the era tended to lock up if the balls in the ramps were gummed up or if there was a lot of brake dust in them.

If you were on hard service it could be because the front wheels make a different arc then the rear wheels. Tension can build in the transmission and lock up.

A4Ts have hydraulic brake setups like the Vistas. It would seem very odd for both to lock up at the same time and the tractor to continue to move forward with the rears sliding. Sounds like there has to be something mechanical wrong in the rear differential. Otherwise, the fronts would have been locked as well.

Unless there is something in the A4T drive train that will isolate the front drive from the rear? Never worked on one.

Yeah. When talking with Mike Verhulst, it was clear they used as many off-the-shelf parts as possible to keep development and production cost down. Some of the parts were used as early as the G900s.

My gut tells me this is mechanical. There is a noise that sounds like a tooth off somewhere. More noticeable in certain gears than others. After I stopped and backed up, it was fine. Hard to tell where the noise is coming from.

We know nothing on the history of it.
