Axle housing gaskets

The gaskets between the rear axle housing and the transmission case are leaking on my 46 ZTN and the original metal shimmed gaskets are no longer there. Should I be able to take the bolts out, move the housing back a little, cut out a new gasket, cut it at the top and slip it in from the bottom? Any Suggestions?

Probably not what you want to hear, but the best way would be to remove the transmission cover, take the big nuts off the bull gears and then remove the axle housings. You may have to pull the bull pinions to get the bull gear off the shaft too.
I recommend this mainly because you can clean the surfaces better before reassembly.

If you are dead set on doing it your way, I would use either Permatex RTV or that Loctite gasket maker product rather than trying to make a new gasket. The real issue is getting rid of any old gasket bits and rust that may be in there.

I recall once having a hand in splitting a Massey 235 (or similar number) and attempting to stop a rear main seal oil leak by replacing the rear main seal. The other mechanic I was with (who thought he was in charge) didn't want to take the time to scrape all the old gasket material off the seal adapter. He slobbered a generous amount of RTV on it and bolted it back on. It leaked like a sifter for the rest of the time we owned the tractor. I always thought if we had taken the time to do it right, it may not have leaked.
