them old oils were poor years ago when tractor was built. they were low detergent and the engine carboned up. any new mutigrade oil is the way to go. you can use anything from 10-30, 10-40-20-50 depending on the weather temperature. many people even use the diesel 15-40 in there gas tractors. probably dont want to switch directly over to 15-40 from 30 wt. the best thing to do is remove the oil pan and wash it out good as it will be all slugged up most likely.

30 wt is what I run. I do use oil formulated for small engines because it still has zinc in it and the camshaft likes the zinc.
You do want a detergent oil it it so any debris is carried to the filter. Non detergent oils tend to sludge up the oil sump.

If you simply have to run multi-viscosity oil, use something pretty thick, like 10w40 or 20w50. Those engines had some knocks in them even when they were in pretty good shape and the 4 star engine I had that came to me with some light viscosity oil (Probably 10w30 or 5w30) in it Really knocked. The oil was noticeably thinner than 30wt.
