G707 Capabilities

Hi folks,

I just heard through the grapevine at work about someone about 40 minutes from me
who has a G707 diesel, apparently in good running original condition, and is
willing to part with it for a song. I know very little about the 705/707's, but
have always loved the large moline units, at the price/distance is almost too
tempting to pass up.

I can't justify it for my own farm (too many projects on the go, but might be able
to find a use for it at Dad's as the large tractor on the place. I'm told by
someone who ran it years ago that they think they remember it having the live pto
option. I have a hard time believing this, but it would certainly add to the
appeal.

Anything I should look for if I take a gander at this? I'm thinking it would pull a
4-16 trail plow and 16' disc quite nicely. If it indeed had the live PTO option
(which I doubt), possibly even a round baler? How did the live PTO option work on
these? Was it truly live, or was it independent?

Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated.

Daniel

No true LPTO on that series. Semi LPTO was optional, and just an external clutch to slip bull pinion so could be engaged/disengaged on the go. Same setup on U G etc. 101hp should easily handle plow or 16't cult. No LPTO on anything with hand clutch.

They are a great tractor. I have one that I go to vintage tractor pulls with (usually a demo pull because of its age, 1965.) Came in second place in the 7500 t0 9999 pound class. I don't know what a song costs but I would buy it in a heartbeat if you think the price is good.pulls an 18 foot cultivator with mounted harrows with no problem in third gear.

no good for baling. they are just a field tractor. they have a nice ride due to the long wheel base. as for saying they pull good in that class here that's class 5. that is a class 6 tractor. plus they have too fast of first gear and are not too good in the tractor pulls. the 660 international outpulls them like nothing. they are basically 18' cultivator. 16 ft. disc. or 5-6 bottom plow tractor. plus they dont bring high dollars either.

At least in this neighborhood, a G707 that runs well, isnt a total rust bucket, and has useable tires will bring $3500-5000+.

I have one, farmed with it in the past, not a very nimble tractor for small spaces. Made a heck of a PTO power unit though. Ran the feed mill many, many hours. Now, I just use it to pull with. As to Rustreds comment below, Ive won the season points championship for 6 or 7 years now. Generally I only have to worry about the other MMs in the class, though there are a couple very non stock Deeres that pull well.

Also as mentioned below, the PTO is non live, or an optional pinion clutch. There are very few with a working pinion clutch left. They just didnt hold up.

Another also, there were a few parts that were specific to the G707/708 that can be hard to find if you need them. That said, there are still quite a number of them left considering how few were built.
