What was the original battery for a R and where was it located, and any pictures would be greatly appreciated. We are trying to restore to 100% original.

I lay my Optima batteries on the side to clear the tank.
Some of the very early Rs had the battery mounted behind the rear axle on the operator platform.

On my R I shimmed both ends of the gas tank up a little to get the battery under there. It works fine, but doesn't have the nice straight line of sight along the top of the hood and gas tank.

I bought one at NAPA that fit under the tank as shown.

Has to be a short one. I understand one for an old VW bug fits. Or look up sizes, interstate used to make one that fit.

Sorry but If you want your R to be original then the decals are wrong. The decal on the gas tank and on the hood were never used togather. If your tractor is a 1949 then the hood decal is wrong. Most people get the 1949 wrong. See picture of 49 It has wrong motor and alt but right decals
