This post is for a friend/neighbor of mine, he collects old combine's his latest arrival is a G-4, with the Z engine, He's got it loose, but when 2-3 got to the top it hit something solid, he says it's rock solid,he says its not carbon build up, anyway what do you think is going on with the old Z motor? And you can get gaskets set and some parts for it right ??

Check for a stuck valve or valves.

You can get parts and gaskets from Welters Farm Supply in Verona Missouri 417-498-6496.

The phone will probably be busy, because they stay busy. Keep trying.

On that side valve engine valves would not interfere with the piston. BUT the valves should be free first or he will be bending the malleable rocker arms. Take the plugs out. If he can rotate it backwards a small amount from where he turned it, then blow in the spark plug holes with compressed air and blow out the crap. There is always one valve on a 4cyl engine that is open when the engine stops. mice will crawl through exhaust system through the open valve and carry in who knows what.

Remove the head. If you're careful, you can reuse it. These are low compression flathead engines and I have reused head gaskets before with success. New is best of course. Take the valve covers off on the opposite side. Now, you can gently tap any stuck valves back and forth and free them up. You can also easily clean anything the mice have packed on top of the pistons. These are very easy engines to work on.

Very likely something has fallen into one of the bores and will not allow a piston to go past TDC.

I have pulled many seeds and nuts from inside of the those bores that were deposited there by a four legged critter.

You can try blowing the trash out with air but if there is more of it sitting behind the valves, it may fall in later. My last 3 motors of that type have been that way. Had to pull the head and the manifolds to get all the seeds removed.

Ok, i talked him this morning,he's got the talent and time to take it apart, and he can get gaskets, i am sure it's a go then,And thanks guys!!

Had a RE motor recently that has magneto. Magneto gasket wasn't sealing and moisture got into the oil pump/ cam gear and front bearing. Had similar problem.

He got it loose, it was a stuck valve, but he did bend a rocker arm, so there cast iron right, but it did bend???
