ZTU road gear problem

My son got his 1946 ZTU running recently. Only issue at this time is it won’t run in 5th gear. Tractor pulls down and dies when let out on clutch. It moves ok, just won’t power up and take off. Any ideas?

So basically it just chokes down, not that the transmission is bound up or anything?

Have you tried shifting to 5th on the fly? Our ZB won't pull off from a standing start in 5th. Its been over 15 years since the ZTU ran, but I don't think it will either, even though it is geared lower.

Chokes down yes. I’ll try shifting on the fly and see what happens. A friend said to try the same thing. Thanks

As mentioned by T.R.K., my '40 ZTU will practically "die" if I attempt to take off from a complete stop in road gear. I am not "interested" in "feathering" the clutch that much. I always use a lower gear to at least get the unit rolling then shift to 5th. Just a thought but just something I have always done since growing up on any tractor no matter the size, error, color, etc. Just my thoughts right, wrong, or indifferent. Good luck.

I recall my Dad only went to road gear while already rolling in the '48 ZTU. That gear is FAST. You will get a little gear lash/grind shifting on the fly.
