Changing starter from 6 to 12v

My ZAU, RTU, UTS, and BF have all been changed to 12 volts and still have the original 6 volt starters. They work great. If the 6 volt solenoids eventually fail, just put a 12 volt one on when you replace them. The starters themselves work great on 12 volts.

I think what these guys are trying to say is if your 6v starter is in good condition mechanically, you can use it as it is. Take note, I say good condition. 12v. won't fix a 6v. starter that has problems for very long.

If your 6v solenoid does not work on 12v, you may have to change that part. The solenoid is the switch on the top of the starter that sends current through its windings when the starter button is pressed.

I have a 335 and Mom's BG that were originally on 6v and the starters have both given good service for something like 25 years on a 12v system.

The main thing is, if the tractor doesn't start right away for whatever reason, don't let it crank for prolonged periods of time. Just short bursts.
