GTB Timing Gear Case Question

Our 1952 GTB has a 1" long notch that has been cut out of the timing gear case immediately to the right of the water pump housing and just below the set screw that holds the bushing in place for the accessory shaft.
Pictures in our IT Manual show something similar but it is not detailed enough to know for sure. Some pictures on line also show some sort of modification made to these castings.
Has anyone seen this before and can anyone explain why this would have ever been cut out in the first place?

Thanks

IT manuals not best kinda like tractordata. Don't rebuild on the specs. Have a GTB here in MB. Can get you pic's of water pump

I & T manuals provide just enough information to get a guy in trouble. Get yourself a set of factory manuals, either originals or copies. Plenty of both available on EBay, etc. Then use the I & T manuals you have for starting brush fires.
