don't know where u got those spec's from... but a non diesel exhaust valve is .020 hot. the diesels are as I posted.

Couldn't find hot settings, but from the I&T manual, cold settings for a diesel GVI are:

Intake - 0.012
Exhaust - 0.020

Specs don't mean much on a 60 year old valve train just rough idea. I just do them by feel. An old MM dealer told to make them clatter a bit.

well I just looked it up now in the IT manual, and its as lyndon and I posted for all the different engines. and I have done a few also.

Just checked my ORIGINAL Minneapolis Moline Farm Equipment Division of Motec Industries operators manual and it states as noted by "Rustred" that the clearance for the intake is .010" AND THE EXHAUST IS .018" AND SHOULD BE DONE AFTER EVERY 300 HRS OF OPERATION OR AFTER TORQUING THE CYLINDER HEAD NUTS. ***** IT MUST BE DONE WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE!

really? guess you don't know that all that clattering is just premature wear on the valve stem and rocker. how do you get optimum performance from an engine by guessing? spec's are there for a reason.

I agree and disagree with all you guys. An old timer once told me "If you can here em you aintagonna smell em" If you go back to the 40's to the 70's MM increased the valve clearance on the U's via service bulletins because of burnt valves. And as was stated you don't want them banging away. I usually go on the slightly loose side of the spec. For two reasons. One: From the time you set them going forward normally the valve wears into the head and clearance is less. Two: nobody resets the tappets every 300 to 500 Hours.

I hauled these out (drove) OF THE LAKE STREET PLANT , ALONG WITH M-5'S, ETC. AND THE GUYS ON THE ENGINE LINE SET THEM TO SPECS AND SO THAT THE FEELER GAUGE CAME OUT EASILY. AS TO THE 300HRS TO RESET --- that was in the MOTEC Manual I got from the printing "office" at Hopkins (basement of the administration office bldg) IN 1961 I believe and so is original as it could get. I would agree as to wear causing changes that sometime requires setting by "hearing" though.
